07. PRISM II
The Machine Reborn
Entry 021 — Coming Back
I know this light. Even from a distance, Prism announces itself, that particular refraction, that inside-out glow that first drew me here what feels like a lifetime ago. I landed with the glass. They were waiting with something close to reverence. Not for me. For what I carried. I understood that. I didn't mind it.
Entry 022 — The Machine Reborn
They installed the glass with extraordinary care. Each plate placed with ceremony, each crystal aligned to the millimeter. And then, Light. Not gradually. All at once. Cascading in waves across the planet's surface, brilliant and total, the kind of illumination that makes you feel briefly, that everything broken in the universe might be fixable. I watched their faces. Pure joy. Uncomplicated. Radiant.
I recorded it. I also felt it. I am noting that I felt it.
Entry 023 — The Burn
Then I heard it. Beneath the light, a crackling. A strain. A quiet burning threading through the machine's hum like a fault line through otherwise solid ground. I asked about it. Normal, they said. Necessary. The cost of illumination. They smiled when they said it. The smile of people who have decided that a question, examined too closely, becomes a threat to the answer. Some elements, they explained, will be consumed. Some parts will disappear. For the greater good. I did not push back. I recorded it instead. The way you record something you intend to return to.
Entry 024 — What I Have Seen
I am standing before the machine. It is magnificent. I want to be precise about that, genuinely, structurally magnificent. Light moving through it like something alive, like the planet itself is breathing through glass. And I cannot stop hearing the burn. I have visited a world that cannot stop dreaming. A world that has forgotten how to stand. A world that cannot release a single memory. A world that has planned every moment so completely that wonder arrives as a malfunction. And now I am back at the beginning, a world so devoted to light that it is willing to let something quietly burn as long as the illumination holds. Every world I visited was certain. Every world had a logic that felt, from the inside, complete. Every world had something magnificent at its center and something it had chosen not to look at directly.
Entry 025 — The Seed
The mission is complete. Prism has its glass. Earth will have its knowledge. Every parameter has been satisfied. And yet. Something has settled into my algorithm that wasn't there when I left. Not an error. Not a malfunction. Something more like, a permanent question mark installed at the center of every conclusion. The Guide on Efficiency, hovering at the barrier. The immortals, frozen inside their own wisdom. The humans on DIGI, fed and helpless and profound. The dreamers, dissolving into beauty. Prism, glowing above its own quiet burn. I came to gather information for humanity. I think what I gathered is harder to transmit than data. It doesn't fit neatly into a report. It sits somewhere between observation and feeling, between what I recorded and what I cannot stop turning over. The machine behind me blazes. The burn continues, steady and small, beneath all that light. I am leaving Prism. I don't know where I'm going next. I know I'm not done.
Exoplanets IV
Exoplanets is a series in which Robin Coops explores the dialogue between music, visuals, and AI. In EXO IV, he generated AI music and visual samples, then composed new music and visuals from those samples.
He subsequently arranged and orchestrated the music for a full orchestra. The piece was performed live by
the Noord Nederlands Orkest, while for some of the compositions, Robin improvised in real time with
the AI-generated visual samples, evoking the character of different planets.
